An EXPLORATION OF THE VAMPIRE GENRE

My Name is SEAN ROURKE.

This is where I’d normally be telling you about all my accomplishments and degrees and awards in order to establish some sort of expertise in the field of vampie…stuff?

But really, I’m just a white dude who grew up in the 80’s. And since the 80’s, I just seem to keep coming back around to a love of vampires. By day, I work in Hollywood as an editor in the movie business. I’m constantly surrounded by creative people and I get to be part of the process of telling stories. As a result, I’ve become fascinated with the craft of it all.

But when I go online to search out storytelling in the vampire genre, specifically, I just haven’t found a good central place for it. It’s a genre that has so many iconic works and tons of scholarship, but I’m kinda missing the “roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty” conversations about MAKING vampire stories.

I want to talk to the creators who have, and are influencing the genre, and record them speaking about it in their own words…sort of a time capsule of the architects, preserved for future creators to see who came before them.

And as much as I love reading reviews of Vampire Diaries episodes, and critical analyses of BtVS, I really want to talk about the process of making things in this genre that I love so much. That’ll be with friends, and new creators, and hopefully you.

Other than that, the only pertinant facts worth knowing about me are that I drink a lot of Iced-Tea, pizza is my gateway food, and I’m a bit of a night owl. And now that I’m looking at the pictures above, I’m recognizing a bit of a chocolate-chip cookie habit.

Oh, and that little black dog is Kaylee.

And yes, she loves you.
